Practitioner-in-the-Loop

The human stays the authority.

The AI industry is racing toward a future where the human is unnecessary. Faster models, bigger context windows, autonomous agents, AGI timelines. Some of that is genuinely valuable. But the conversation has drifted so far toward replacing people that nobody is asking what gets lost along the way.

I built in the opposite direction. The tools are cognitive extensions, not replacements. I work in a CLI environment with a skill system, specialized agents, voice protocols loaded before every generation, evaluation lenses dispatched in parallel. The infrastructure exists so that I can think with the tools without the tools thinking for me.

Three years of daily practice. I read everything the tool produces. I reject what doesn’t land. I know where it’s strong (structured analysis, pattern detection, research at speed) and where it drifts (voice, judgment, editorial decisions, anything that requires knowing what matters). The output is something I’d put my name on because I stayed in the loop at every step.

The other four pillars exist to serve this one. Voice governance keeps my sound. Lens extraction keeps my seeing. Structural capture keeps my thinking. Input-first design keeps my workflow. All of them exist because the alternative is letting the tool decide what I meant, how I sound, what mattered, and whether the work is good.

Research

Prosthetic Cognition documents the theory: AI tools as cognitive extension governed by the practitioner, not as autonomous agents replacing human judgment.

The Rig

The working environment: Claude Code as the primary interface, a skill system with specialized tools, agents that handle research and analysis, voice protocols enforced on every output, evaluation lenses running independently. The infrastructure that makes the methodology operational.

Evidence

Encore: thirteen years of human judgment holding a platform together through three technology shifts. Lionfish: what happens when nobody stays in the loop and the system breaks. This Site: all five pillars in action. The methodology compiled the site you’re reading.
