What Registration Actually Means
When the layers align, you can't see the system. When they don't, you feel it.
In screenprinting, registration is when the color layers land exactly where they’re supposed to. Each color gets its own screen. Each screen prints one pass. If the screens are aligned, the colors stack and you get the image. If they’re off by a fraction, you get mud. The shapes blur. The edges ghost. You can see something is wrong even if you can’t name what.
I spent years pulling squeegees at USA Tees in Brooklyn and Atlas Embroidery in Fort Lauderdale. Registration was the thing you checked before anything else. You could have the best ink, the best mesh count, the best artwork. If the plates were out of register, none of it mattered. The output looked wrong and you felt it before you understood why.
That word stuck with me because the problem keeps showing up in every material I’ve worked in.
A brand identity has layers. Photography, typography, color, voice, packaging, the website. Each one is a separate screen. When they’re in register, a stranger encounters one coherent personality. When they’re not, the stranger feels the misalignment. The logo says one thing. The photography says another. The copy says a third. Individually each layer might be good work. Together they produce mud.
An enterprise platform has layers too. The design system, the component library, the interaction patterns, the data architecture, the typography hierarchy. Thirteen years on Encore taught me what happens when those layers drift out of register over time. A new developer adds a color that isn’t in the variables file. A designer introduces a pattern that doesn’t match the existing system. Each individual decision is reasonable. The cumulative effect is that the product stops feeling like one thing.
A classroom has layers. The curriculum, the accommodations, the pacing, the assessment. Twelve students with twelve IEPs meant twelve sets of layers that all had to land in the same room at the same time. When a student’s accommodation plan said one thing and the classroom reality said another, that kid felt the misregistration even if they couldn’t articulate it. The structure said I see you. The execution said I forgot.
The word works because it describes a structural relationship, not a quality judgment. Registration isn’t about whether individual layers are good. It’s about whether they agree with each other. You can have five excellent layers that are all out of register with each other. The result is still mud.
This is the concept I keep coming back to across every domain I work in. The material changes. Print, brand, enterprise software, AI tools, a classroom, a kitchen. The operation is the same. Get the layers into alignment. Make sure they stay there. When they drift, you feel it before you can measure it.
