A technique is something you learn in one material. A pica ruler works in print. A specific JavaScript pattern works in front-end code. A particular way of structuring a lesson plan works in a classroom. Techniques are valuable. They’re also bound to their context. Move to a different material and the technique doesn’t come with you.

A principle transfers. Registration works in screenprinting, in brand identity, in enterprise software, in a classroom, in a kitchen. The material changes every time. The structural problem is the same every time: multiple layers that need to align. If a concept only works in one context, it might be a good technique. If it works in five contexts with five different materials, you’re looking at something deeper.

I didn’t set out to prove transfer. I just kept changing materials.

Screenprinting to web development. Print shops to classrooms. Classrooms to enterprise platforms. Enterprise to brand. Brand to AI tools. AI tools to household systems. Each time the surface changed completely. The vocabulary changed. The constraints changed. The people changed. And each time I found the same structural problems underneath the surface.

Registration showed up in print as color alignment. It showed up in brand as the gap between what the logo says and what the photography says. It showed up in Encore as twelve years of small decisions drifting the product away from its intent. It showed up in the classroom as the distance between what the IEP promised and what the student actually experienced.

Scaffolding showed up on construction sites as temporary structure that holds the work. It showed up in the classroom as decomposed instructions that come off when the student can do the task alone. It showed up in AI tools as FormWork, the session coordinator that structures the work and then gets out of the way.

Fidelity showed up in brand as the question of whether the output matches the intent. It showed up in AI as the question of whether the generated text sounds like you or sounds like a machine performing you.

Each transfer is a test. If the concept breaks when you move it to new material, it was never a principle. It was a technique wearing a principle’s clothes. If it holds, you’ve found something structural. Something about how complex systems work regardless of what they’re made of.

The site I built is the evidence for this. Every page demonstrates transfer. The teaching practice page and the AI governance page use the same vocabulary because they describe the same operations. The brand case study and the enterprise case study share structural patterns because the problems are structurally the same. A visitor who reads three pages from different sections should start to feel the connections before I name them.

Transfer across five different materials is how I know the methodology is real, and not just domain expertise wearing a framework’s name.
