The Executive Function Problem as a Distribution Problem
Writing the content is the easy part. Getting it in front of people is the executive function killer.
I can write all day. The methodology is clear. The source material is deep. The compilation process works. Drafting posts is the easy part.
Distribution is where executive function goes to die.
Copy the post. Format it for Dev.to. Format it differently for Medium. Format it again for Hashnode. Set canonical URLs on each platform. Open LinkedIn. Write the post. Add the comment link. Open Reddit. Find a relevant thread. Draft a response. Check that the response is genuine and not promotional. Post it. Open LinkedIn again. Browse the feed. Find something worth engaging with. Write a comment.
Each individual step is simple. The aggregate is a context-switching nightmare. Each platform has its own interface, its own conventions, its own login, its own copy-paste quirks. The cognitive load isn’t in any single task. It’s in the transitions between them.
This is the same problem I solved in the classroom. A student who could do any individual task would fall apart during transitions. The math was fine. The reading was fine. The switch from math to reading at 10:15 burned through executive function that wasn’t available for the reading itself. The accommodation was structural: consistent transition routines, advance warnings, visual schedules. Remove the decision-making from the transition. Make the transition automatic so the cognitive resources go toward the actual work.
The DayDash morning dashboard is the same accommodation applied to distribution. One page. Today’s LinkedIn post is ready to copy. The Reddit threads are pre-matched with drafted responses. The task checkboxes track what’s been done. The system made the decisions overnight. The morning is execution, not planning.
The published ledger tracks what actually went out. Without it, every session starts from “what have I already posted?” That question burns executive function on recall instead of on production. The ledger answers the question before it gets asked.
The weekly rotation assigns modes to days. Monday is writing. Tuesday is cross-posting. Wednesday is writing. Thursday is cross-posting. Friday is review. Saturday is batch drafting. Sunday is rest. The rotation removes the daily decision of “what kind of work do I do today?” The schedule decided. I execute.
Every accommodation is structural. None of them require discipline. None of them require motivation. None of them require a good executive function day. They work on the days when I have nothing left as well as the days when I’m sharp. That’s the test of a real accommodation. It works when the resource it accommodates is depleted.
Distribution is a solved problem for people with unlimited executive function. For the rest of us, it’s a systems design problem. The system absorbs the switching cost so the person can focus on the work that actually requires their attention.
